FROM THE DESK OF...

Karen OKaren O'Shannacery, E.D.
I've been asked about recently proposed legislation that would force homeless people into shelter during extreme weather. While the sentiment of keeping people safe is admirable, legislation does not take the big picture into account.

Some points to consider:
That there are not enough shelter beds available currently - turnaways are a critical issue throughout the year.
That there isn’t a shelter set up specifically to meet the needs of people who may be actively under the influence of drugs.
Shelters cannot force people to stay.

Shelters are pathways to resources and housing when people are willing to work with the shelter workers

The answer to people being out in the street is housing - we need the government to continue to develop specialized housing resources for folks.

Karen YKaren Young, D.R.D.
The cold wet weather is here, and with it an increased need for those who are shelterless to find ways to keep warm and dry.

You can help by having a Blanket Drive, or a clean-out-your-closets Drive among co-workers or with your church group, or with your friends. Donations may be dropped off to a location nearest you, and will stay in your community.
